About Me

About Me

I studied Classics, French and Archaeology in South Africa before pursuing postgraduate study in the United Kingdom, where I obtained a Master of Studies in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies and subsequently a DPhil in Classical Languages and Literature from the University of Oxford. My thesis considered the mythological epic poems of the North African author Dracontius (fl. late 5th century AD) and how his manipulation of both myth and rhetorical practices reflect a very personal response to the socio-political and cultural situation of post-Roman North Africa.

In addition to publishing academic articles, I have written opinion pieces for The Daily Friend, the online newspaper of the South African Institute for Race Relations, as well as reviews of operas and concerts for Criticks, the online review publication of the British Society for Eighteenth Century Studies.

I am also a pianist and harpsichordist and have founded ad-hoc ensembles to perform lesser-known music of the 17th and 18th centuries. All the scores for these are researched,  sourced and then edited from the original manuscripts or prints by me.

"I began lessons with Lynton with the goal of refining my translations and to further develop my understanding  of Latin grammar and syntax. Lessons with Lynton have been invaluable in these aspects. Our lessons have focused on strengthening foundational concepts while progressing to more complicated passages.  His understanding and knowledge of the classical world is immense which makes the lessons incredibly interesting. I would highly recommend Lynton to anyone looking for instruction in Latin."

"[Lynton] has the highest reputation as a language instructor and tutor, and is very much revered among our students. I have been truly impressed by his dedication, his sense of duty, and, moreover, by his firm grip on the wide range of complex tasks that he regularly faces in teaching our graduate students."
