Beginner's Latin & Beginner's Greek

The full deal, beyond just amo, amas, amat (and its Greek equivalent)...

We start at a complete beginner's/rusty beginner's level and take you to full competency in Latin/Greek. At the end of the course, you will be able to read the ancient language with ease, and write basic sentences fluently.

​

Like all languages, each topic within Latin and Greek grammar builds heavily on what has been learned thus far. For this reason, progression is at your own pace and we make sure that you are fully comfortable with each concept before moving on.

​

My method is primarily of the grammar-translation style, as I believe this provides the best grounding for learning any language, providing explicit structure and a clear, concise explanation of how and why the language works the way it does.

​

Lessons will be given over Skype as a mix of 'lecturing' and exercises. Additionally, you would typically be required to do some preliminary reading and homework exercises for each unit, in order to consolidate what has been covered in the lesson.

​

The type of Latin I teach includes both Classical and later usage, and you will be exposed to writing of a wide range of periods. Greek is limited to Classical usage.

Fee structure:

Beginners will start with a set of four lessons, which will give both you and me a good idea of your progression. Thereafter lessons may be bought individually or in further sets of four. Each 1 hour lesson is ZAR 850.00. A set of four lessons is ZAR 3200.00.
